TriboSys™ Medical Lubricants | FAQ’S

Can TriboSys™ medical lubricants only be purchased through Miller-Stephenson?

Yes, TriboSys™ medical lubricants can only be purchased through Miller-Stephenson Chemical Company.

What is TriboSys™ Oil?

Miller-Stephenson’s TriboSys™ oils (MS-31XXMD) are clear, colorless, perfluoropolyether (PFPE) fluorinated synthetic oils that are nonreactive, nonflammable, safe in chemical, oxygen service, and are long-lasting. TriboSys™ oil is offered in 5 different viscosity grades, that are selected based off the customers temperature needs and to meet your application requirements, with lower viscosity grades ideal for light loads and temperatures and higher viscosity grades ideal for higher temperature and load requirements.

What are the TriboSys™ Oil Grades?

  1. MS-3130MD
  2. MS-3140MD
  3. MS-3150MD
  4. MS-3160MD
  5. MS-3170MD

What is TriboSys™ Grease?

Miller-Stephenson’s TriboSys™ greases (MS-32XXMD) are PFPE (perfluoropolyether) based systems, thickened with PTFE to form a white buttery grease providing the end-user with long-lasting, superior lubrication. TriboSys™ grease is offered in 5 different viscosity grades, that are selected based off temperature needs and to meet your application requirements, with lower viscosity grades ideal for light loads and temperatures and higher viscosity grades ideal for higher temperature and load requirements.

What are the TriboSys™ Grease Grades?

  1. MS-3230MD
  2. MS-3240MD
  3. MS-3250MD
  4. MS-3260MD
  5. MS-3270MD

Can TriboSys™ oil or grease be used on Plastic? Metal? Rubber?

Yes, TriboSys lubricants offer unmatched friction reduction on metal to metal, metal to plastic, plastic to rubber, and metal to rubber with no fear of staining, oxidation or migration.  Customers typically observe a significant decrease in alloy component wear and significant increases in O-ring and other rubber component service lives.

Can I use TriboSys™ for my medical device?

Absolutely, TriboSys™ greases and oils are biocompatible under ISO 10993 standards, chemically inert, nonhazardous and non-nutrient. All TriboSys™ lubricants are unaffected by all forms of hospital sterilization without oxidation or degradation. TriboSys™ is typically applied to within medical device housings to reduce tacky sticking, reduce coefficient of friction in a particular application, O-rings, bellows, springs, etc.

**Please note that Miller-Stephenson does not recommend TriboSys™ greases or oils for implanted devices and/or use on devices that have exposure to human tissue and blood.

What are the common applications for TriboSys™ Lubricants?

• Single and Multi-Use Surgical Device Housings
• O-rings
• Anesthesia Machine Parts
• Oxygen Valves
• Monitoring Devices: Housings, Covers, Pumps
• Renal Care: Blood Filter Housings, Pumps
• Fluid & Drug Delivery: Syringes, Stopcocks, Luers, etc.
• Diabetes Management: Glucose Meters, Infusion Pumps, Insulin Pens

Can TriboSys™ medical lubricants reduce maintenance cost or downtime?

Yes, TriboSys™ can greatly reduce overall maintenance costs associated with critical and non-critical medical applications by prolonging service cycles. TriboSys™ biocompatible lubricants are also unaffected by all forms of repeated hospital sterilization without oxidation or degradation making it a prefect lubrication choice.

What color is TriboSys™ oil?

TriboSys™ oils are perfluoropolyether (PFPE) fluorinated synthetic oils that are clear and colorless.

What color is TriboSys™ Grease?

TriboSys™ grease is a white buttery grease and cannot be dyed for manufacturing purposes.

What type of biocompatibility testing was done on TriboSys™ greases and oils?

TriboSys™ greases and oils were sent for a panel analysis of biocompatibility testing that include:

  1. Intra cutaneous
  2. Dermal Sensitization
  3. Cytotoxicity

What size options are TriboSys™ greases and oils available in?

  1. 1/2 oz Syringe
  2.  2 oz Syringe
  3.  0.5 kg Jar
  4.  1 kg Jar

What is the shelf life for TriboSys™ Lubricants?

TriboSys™ medical grade oils and greases have an indefinite shelf life if left unopened and stored in a clean dry location. Unopened containers have shown no change in properties after 20 years or more when stored at ambient temperatures. Opened containers could be contaminated with moisture or dirt and should be used with caution if their storage history is unknown. If the lubricants are clean, uncontaminated, and have been stored so that the oil loss is minimized, they are safe for use. The lubricants do not oxidize or degrade while sitting in storage or in use. They are stable under conditions up to their decomposition temperature. After sitting for long storage period, the oil may separate from the grease. This separation does not affect the performance of the grease. The oil can be mixed back into the grease.

Is there a difference between Krytox™ lubricant’s and TriboSys™ lubricants?

Although Krytox™ and TriboSys™ have similar fluorinated chemistry, Krytox™ greases and oils do not have biocompatibility testing/reports associated with any grade, where TriboSys™ does. TriboSys™ greases and oils were sent for extensive ISO 10993 biocompatibility testing and can provide reports to our customers.
